Have you ever looked at someone’s success and said “I wish I can do that”? It turns out, the opportunities are out there.

I am not here to give you false hope, but instead to be realistic about opportunity. There are many times I have watched the gymnasts at the Olympics and said “I wish I could do that” but in reality I don’t. Or I have said “I wish I knew as much as a mechanic so I can fix my own car” but in reality, I do not wish for it because I know I will not set aside the time. What I am trying to say is, be realistic about your wishes, and then ask yourself “Why can’t I?” My first “ahh hah” moment came in the same format. I noticed an entrepreneur’s successes and asked myself “Why can’t I start my own business.”

“It’s a Lifestyle”

A couple years ago, I was involved in developing the brand of a clothing line, Jaxon Jovie. It was a team of four interns and the CEO of a marketing agency who owned multiple businesses. After constructing the brand guidelines, voice, and marketing strategies all in a 40×30 room, I began to realize the CEO never stopped critically thinking. I asked him one day if he ever stops working. “It is a lifestyle, I do not think of it as work” he responded.

The work atmosphere was empowering and I wanted to be involved. At that moment, I asked myself what separated him from me, and there was nothing except a better sense of style and owning a business. That is when I decided to pursue my passion for public relations professionally. I realized, just because I was younger did not mean I had to take the typical path of attending a university and waiting until I was done with my degree to pursue a career. The same opportunities that are in front of the CEO are in front of me.

Take the Leap

The point is, there will be several opportunities to look at others successes and say “Why can’t I do that.” Nine times out of ten you will not find a good excuse. Take the leap and think on your own because it is your life.
